If you’ve ever thought about booking a family, maternity, or newborn photography session but hesitated, you’re not alone. As a family and newborn photographer, I hear the same worries come up again and again, and honestly, most of them are based on myths that simply aren’t true.
So let’s gently bust a few of the most common photography myths that might be stopping you from booking the session you’ll one day be so glad you did.
Myth 1: “We need to be perfectly dressed and styled”
This must be one of the biggest concerns parents have, and the good news is, perfection is NOT the goal!
Family and newborn photography is all about connection, not coordinated outfits or Pinterest-worthy styling. Soft, neutral tones work beautifully, but you don’t need to go out and buy an entirely new wardrobe. I always guide families on what photographs well and what feels comfortable, because when you’re relaxed, it shows in your images.
Bare feet, simple clothing, and a few thoughtful layers often photograph far better than anything overly styled.
Myth 2: “My baby won’t cooperate”
Babies don’t need to “perform” for beautiful photos.
Whether your baby is sleepy, wide awake, feeding, crying, or needing cuddles, all of that is completely normal. Newborn and baby sessions are designed to move at your baby’s pace, with plenty of time for feeds, nappy changes, and settling.
Some of the most meaningful images come from those in-between moments: tiny stretches, sleepy yawns, being comforted in your arms. There’s no such thing as a “failed” session because your baby was being… a baby.
Myth 3: “We’ll wait until things settle down”
This is a big one, especially for new parents.
Life with a newborn is busy, messy, and exhausting, and it rarely feels like the “right” time. But those early days pass faster than you expect. Tiny fingers uncurl, newborn scrunch disappears, and suddenly you’re wondering how your baby got so big!
There will always be clothes to fold and sleep to catch up on. But these moments (the ones you’re living right now) deserve to be remembered exactly as they are.
Myth 4: “I’m not confident in front of the camera”
Most of my clients say this before their session, and you’d never know it looking at their photos.
You don’t need to know how to pose or where to look. My job is to gently guide you, help you feel comfortable, and capture you as you truly are. Real smiles, natural interactions, and quiet moments matter far more than stiff poses.
You don’t have to be “photogenic”. You just have to show up!
Myth 5: “Professional photos are only for special milestones”
Of course, milestones are important. But everyday moments are just as meaningful.
A growing bump, tiny newborn yawns, your baby fitting perfectly into your arms. These aren’t things you want to rely on blurry phone snaps to remember.
As I said above, professional family photography isn’t about perfection or big occasions; it’s about preserving the time you’re in now, before it changes.
Final Thoughts…
If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” moments, the “perfect” outfits, or the “perfect” version of yourself, this is your reminder that none of that’s required!
Your family, exactly as you are right now, is already worthy of being photographed.
And one day, these images won’t just be photos, they’ll be memories your family treasures for years to come.
