Becoming a mum changes everything, including how you see yourself.

As a maternity and newborn photographer here in Didcot, Oxfordshire, I speak to so many women who say the same thing before their session:

“I don’t feel like myself.”

“I’ll book when I lose the baby weight.”

“I just don’t feel beautiful right now.”

If that sounds familiar, this is for you.

Because the truth is, you deserve to exist in photographs with your baby. Not 10kg from now. Not when you’ve had more sleep. Now.

Here’s how to feel beautiful in front of the camera after having a baby, even if you don’t quite believe it yet.

  • Redefine what “beautiful” means

After pregnancy and birth, your body is different—softer, stronger, tired, and healing.

But different does NOT mean less.

In my Didcot studio, I don’t photograph “perfect bodies.” I photograph connection. The way your baby fits into your chest. The way they calm when they hear your heartbeat. The way your hand instinctively supports their tiny back.

That’s beauty.

When you focus on the story instead of the size on the label, something shifts. You stop performing and start feeling. And that’s when the magic happens!

  • Let go of the pressure to “bounce back”

The pressure on new mums is relentless. Social media makes it look like everyone else has it together: flat stomach, face full of makeup, completely “put together.”

It’s not real! Your body literally grew and birthed a human. It deserves respect, not criticism.

When you come for a newborn or family session with me, I guide you the entire time. I pose you in ways that feel natural and flattering, with gentle angles, soft movement, and beautiful light. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. That’s my job.

You just need to show up.

  • Choose clothing that feels like you (now)

One of the biggest confidence shifts comes from wearing something that fits your current body well, not something you’re hoping to fit back into.

Flowing dresses, soft knits, high-waited pieces, neutral tones, textures. These photograph beautifully and allow you to move and cuddle your baby without feeling restricted.

Before every session, I help plan outfits, so you’re not standing in front of your wardrobe feeling overwhelmed. Simple, comfortable, flattering always wins over trendy.

If you feel physically comfortable, you’ll automatically look more relaxed.

  • Focus on your baby, not the camera

If you’re worried about how you look, your brain will fixate on it.

So instead, shift your attention.

Smell your baby’s head, kiss their cheeks, trace their fingers, close your eyes and hold them.

When you’re connected to your baby, you forget about the lens. And that’s when I capture the images you’ll treasure, the ones that show love, not self-consciousness.

Years from now, your child won’t look at those photographs and think about your stomach or your arms.

They’ll see safety and love.

  • Give yourself permission to be seen

This is the hardest one. Especially if you’re navigating motherhood on your own.

I meet many single mums who feel like they have to be everything for everyone. Strong, capable, holding it together.

But you’re allowed to take up space. You’re allowed to document your motherhood. And you’re allowed to feel beautiful, even on the hard days.

You don’t need a partner in the frame for your story to matter. Your love is enough!

  • Trust your photographer

When you choose a photographer, whether in Didcot or elsewhere, choose someone who understands postpartum bodies. Someone who doesn’t over-pose or over-edit you into someone unrecognisable.

My approach is simple: soft light, gentle direction, and honest moments.

I will never ask you to suck in, twist unnaturally, or be anything other than a mum with her baby.

And I promise, when you see your gallery, you won’t see the flaws you’re worried about. You’ll see strength, warmth, and SO much love.

If you’re based in Didcot and thinking about booking a newborn or family portrait session, I’d love to create something honest and beautiful for you.

You don’t have to feel “ready.” You’re already enough!
